Breast Augmentation vs. Breast Lift – What’s the difference?

Jul 15th, 2010No Comments

We keep hearing the words Breast Augmentation and Breast Lift all the time in the plastic surgery industry but not everyone is aware of the difference between the two. Women who are considering breast implants often mistake both the procedures to be one and the same. They often make the mistake of asking their plastic surgeon for a breast lift procedure when they actually want a breast augmentation and vice versa.

For those of you who are still confused between the two, well the difference is quite simple. A breast lift is actually meant for women who have sagging or drooping breasts. Breasts can start drooping for a number of reasons and they could also lose shape in the course of time. This is where a breast lift comes in. The procedure is also known as a mastopexy and is ideal for women who want to change the shape or curve of their breasts and want to lift their breasts once again to their original position. A breast lift procedure is not meant for enlarging the breasts. On the other hand, a breast augmentation procedure is precisely for that reason – for enlarging the breasts.

A breast lift procedure as well as a breast augmentation procedure can also be combined into one. Usually a breast lift procedure might not change the firmness of the breast. For those women who along with getting their breasts in shape would like to change the size or firmness as well prefer combining both procedures into one single procedure. A consultation session with your plastic surgeon can help you decide whether you need to go for either of the procedures or both together.

Inconsistency in breasts whether in terms of size, shape or firmness can be tackled by getting a breast lift procedure. As far as a breast augmentation is concerned, it is mainly done to alter the size of the breast. While increasing the size of the breasts can be done anytime as per the wish of the woman getting a breast implant, as far as a breast lift is concerned, most women prefer to wait till certain situations like after child birth or once the breasts start sagging more than what they expected or are comfortable with. While it is not necessary to combine a breast lift and breast augmentation, ultimately it is best to talk to your plastic surgeon on what exactly each procedure will involve and what is recommended for what you actually desire.
